Not only is she Britain’s reigning Drag Superstar and Queen of the North, Ginger
Johnson is showing us how she has gained her most important title: “Most
Dangerous Woman in the UK”.
For the girls, gays, and theys, Johnson needs no introduction; For the rest of you,
Ginger Johnson was the worthy winner of Season 5 of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK
(sorry Michael Marouli fans) – the mothertucking Olympics of Drag. She is a comedic
powerhouse, entering the theatre on a rhinestoned mobility scooter/tricycle that Dolly
Parton would be jealous of. From there, hilarity ensues and the laughs keep growing.
Ginger is a natural on stage. Exciting, camp, energetic, and most importantly
relatable – never afraid to make a fool of herself and laugh along with the audience. I
creased with laughter whilst she was troughing mentos and coke, ON A
TRAMPOLINE!?! She has such a likeable, endearing quality that resonated with the
entire audience who were cheering, hooting, and clapping throughout the hour-long
spectacle. Performing one “death defying” stunt after another as she channelled
inspirations like Zsa Zsa – a circus performer she recalls from her childhood. Not
only does she face deadly thumb tacks and confetti cannons, but she also
unflinchingly tackles Big Bertha… her one tonne cannon that shoots her across the
stage. Along all this genuine bravery and impressive circus prowess, we are treated
to hilarious songs filled with that signature Ginger humour; Fart joke here, Greggs
joke there.
Overall, Ginger Johnson Blows Off was an absolute triumph; it will enter her into the
ranks of British national treasures and cement her as one of the funniest drag comics
and personalities around. I say we should add another title to her large collection…
Queen of The Fringe.
